Schnee, Schnee, Schnee…
Am Sonntag sind wir von einem heftigen Schneefall eingeholt worden… Hier ein paar Bilder und ein Zeitungsartikel darüber, wie es hier gerade ungefähr aussieht. Wegen der Wetterbedingungen ist am Sonntag nahezu kein Bus gefahren, Flüge sind ausgefallen und Autos stehen geblieben… und weniger zu Freunde von vielen Studenten sind alle Prüfungen hier an der Uni am Sonntag ausgefallen, welche nun am letztmöglichen Tag - am 20. Dezember - für diese Leute nachgeholt werden. (Ja, hier gibt es Prüfungen an Sonntagen. Was für ein christliches Land!)

Ontario, Quebec wallowing in massive snowfall

A massive winter storm rolled through Ontario and Quebec yesterday, crippling transit in and out of the country’s main transit hub, causing one city to declare an emergency and leaving at least one person dead.
Hundreds of accidents were reported across the two provinces yesterday, but while most of them were minor, a woman near London, Ont. was killed when she was hit by snowplow at the side of the highway while attempting to clear her windshield. Her children reportedly witnessed the accident. Another woman near Sherbrooke, Que. was in critical condition after another weather-related accident.
Windsor declared an emergency yesterday afternoon after receiving more than 12 centimetres of snow. The emergency designation means the public is was warned to stay inside and the declaration also helps to co-ordinate city services.
“Stay at home,” Const. Kevin Davidson of the Ontario Provincial Police said Sunday. “Don’t travel unless you have absolutely have to.”
Freezing rain, snow, and heavy winds began to smother southern Ontario by noon as a record-breaking storm slammed into Canada from the United States.
Const. Davidson said visibility on Ontario’s Hwy. 401 was down to less than 15 metres in some spots.
The whiteout conditions and slippery roads caused dozens of crashes and cars to go off the road throughout the day.
“The ditches and the medians are just screaming for cars to join them,” Const. Davidson said.
Between 4 a.m. and noon there were more than 70 accidents in Eastern Ontario alone, the OPP reported. One was a hit-and-run that involved a pedestrian getting hit by a private snow plow vehicle. She suffered minor injuries to her leg.
Seven tractor trailers and several cars were involved in a crash Sunday morning in the Cornwall, Ont., area and the 401 westbound lanes were shut down until about 2 p.m. There were no injuries in that crash.
“It’s a mess,” Const. Davidson said. “It’s a good old fashioned winter mess.”
Environment Canada issued various weather warnings for different parts of Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. Snow started falling early Saturday afternoon, beginning what the agency predicts could be a 40-centimetre snowfall across the region by Monday.
Environment Canada says it could be the worst storm in the region in over 60 years.
“This storm track will place much of Southern and Eastern Ontario directly under the brunt of heavy snow. A few claps of thunder along with bursts of very heavy snow are also likely,” said Environment Canada.
In Toronto, 600 snow plows, 300 sidewalk plows and 200 salt trucks tackled the massive dump of snow in that city and officials there said the roads will be cleared again on Monday.
The series of storms this December is in stark contrast to 12 months ago, when most of Ontario had a green Christmas and the majority of snow came between February and April.”

At 6:00 PM a massive winter storm was giving snow and widespread blowing snow to most of southern and eastern Ontario.
Snow and blowing snow will end over most of southern Ontario this evening with the exception of areas to the Lee of Lake Huron. Over eastern Ontario conditions will begin to improve around midnight.
Further amounts up to 5 centimetres are expected over much of southern Ontario with about 10 additional centimetres forecast for eastern Ontario.

To the Lee of Lake Huron intense north to northwesterly squalls have rapidly developed. These squalls will persist most of the night while shifting somewhat to the east. Local additional snowfalls of 15 centimetres and extensive whiteout conditions will occur under these squalls tonight.

Ein erster Rückblick…
Ja, die Zeit hier ist bald vorbei für mich und deshalb ist es Zeit für einen ersten Rückblick. Die folgende Liste habe ich in den letzten zwei Monaten geführt, wobei da natürlich kein Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit besteht! Aber was mir hier wohl am meisten gefehlt hat, ist meine gute alte alma mater in St. Gallen.

…the slow public transportation system,

…people who aren’t able to drive,
…having no kitchen,
…living in residence,
…expensive campus stuff,
…slow working,
…students who study the whole weekend,
…university’s administration,
…groups with bad habits,
…group assignment which are actually individual assignments done by me for all,
…boring parties,
…’pseudo-cool’ Canadians,

Schlittschuhlaufen
Heute habe bei ca. minus 12 Grad, Schneefall und starkem Wind gewagt, Schlittschuh laufen zu gehen. Da die Eisfläche direkt am Lake Ontario war, war der Wind noch einmal ein wenig stärker. Es war das erste Mal, dass ich verstanden habe, warum alle sagen, dass Kanada so kalt ist. Es war eiskalt! Aber ich habe es über zwei Stunden auf dem Eis ausgehalten.
Ein paar Fotos vom heutigen Tag habe ich einem alten Album hinzugefügt.

Vorweihnachtszeit
Das ist schon unglaublich… die Weihnachtszeit beginnt hier Mitte November. Ab Mitte November sind überall Lichter angebracht, Weihnachtsbäume aufgestellt und Weihnachtsgeschenke werden verkauft. Und zum allen übel finden auch die grössten Weihnachtsverantstaltungen schon Mitte November statt. Zum Beispiel hat Toronto die grösste Santa Claus Parade in Nordamerika… aber woher soll ich wissen, dass die schon Mitte November stattfindet? Ich jedenfalls habe sie verpasst 
Das Gute ist, dass wir auch schon Mitte November richtig viel Schnee hatten, sodass auch wirklich schon richtig Weihnachtsstimmung aufgekommen ist. Schnee, Weihnachtsmusik, Weihnachtsschmuck und Weihnachtsgeschenke überall… mittlerweile habe ich mich daran gewöhnt und Weihnachten ist jetzt ja auch nicht mehr weit entfernt!
Das schöne an eine so grossen Stadt wie Toronto ist wirklich, dass man jedes Wochenende irgendwelche Veranstaltungen findet, zu denen man gehen kann. Letztes Wochenende zum Beispiel war ich auf einer grossen Weihnachtsausstellung und am nächsten Tag auf der feierlichen Erleuchtung des offiziellen Weihnachtsbaumes der Stadt - obwohl ich bei Konzernen, Feuerwerk und Reden an der frischen Luft fast vor Kälte gestorben bin… aber das war ein perfektes Beispiel für: Die Ersten werden die Letzten sein - denn ich war direkt vor der Bühne in einer solchen Menschenmasse, dass ich keine Chance hatte, die Kälte zu verlassen. Ich musste wohl oder übel bis zum Ende bleiben!
Nachdem ich jetzt mit viel Schnee, Weihnachtsshopping und Weihnachtsveranstaltung schon richtig in Weihnachtsstimmung gekommen bin, muss ich jetzt leider anfangen, mich hier auf die Prüfungen vorzubereiten. Das bedeutet dann auch automatisch weniger Weihnachtsveranstaltungen und weniger Zeit an der frischen Luft und mehr Zeit in meinem Zimmer…
Und natürlich habe ich auch noch ein paar Bilder. Teilweise sind diese einfach beim Shopping entstanden, manche zeigen die Feier zur Weihnachtsbaumerleuchtung, einige sind auf dem Campus, ein paar in meinem Zimmer und wieder andere sind im Wal-Mart entstanden. Aber die besten Bilder sind zweifelsohne die letzten im Album. Ich habe mal wieder einen Grosswaschtag einlegen müssen bis ich feststellte, dass meine Waschkarte leer war. Nun, kein Problem, dachte ich, die Karte kann ich ja im Erdgeschoss aufladen. Nach 15 Minuten habe ich aufgegeben… der Automat wollte drei verschiedene $5-Scheine nicht akzeptieren. Die Folge: Zwar konnte ich meine ganze Wäsche waschen, aber für den Trockner fehlte das Geld. Und die Bilder zeigen wunderbar, wie man Socken und Strümpfe in einem kleinen Zimmer ohne Wäscheleine trocknet. Schönes Vergnügen.
